Carbon dioxide is an acidic colorless gas with a density about 53% higher than that of dry air. Carbon dioxide molecules consist of a carbon atom covalently double bonded to two oxygen atoms. It occurs naturally in Earth's atmosphere as a trace gas.
Although Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is an inert gas and will displace Oxygen it is also toxic to Humans and Animals in relatively small amounts therefore an Oxygen Monitor should not be used to detect CO2 leaks as the CO2 will reach Toxic levels ( as outlined in HSE EH-40 workplace exposure Limits )
Carbon Dioxide should therefore always be detected with a good Carbon Dioxide monitor .
